    Know that we will be praying for you as you work with and live with your brothers and sisters in the Lord in Guatemala! Hope your flight and the passing through customs goes well. Cara flies back to Chicago from her mission trip today, so we’ll get to her all about her trip to…Dominican Republic (I think). I spoke to Barb today. They are at their cottage this week and are going to take the boat through the narrows today into Leeland. Fun! She said that if we get up there, we can do that too. I LOVE DOING THAT! Nick is working at the rental booth at the Holiday Inn with the boats and jet skiis; she didn’t think the guy with the parasail was there yet this year. Jessie is still at her leadership training on the east coast and so won’t be home for her 20th birthday on 07/07/07. I’m going to go to Fremont on Thursday to paint the inside of Grandma’s garage. Other than that, life will be pretty boring around here….
    Will write again soon. The bird is doing just fine.

  6. Jordan, I sure would like to go on a long fast ride with you tonight, they are such a great time. I miss seeing you, but I am so glad that you are on this mission trip. It is an experience which God wanted you to have, so be looking for the things which he wants you to take from this trip and use for the rest of your life. I believe that God uses these special times to teach us, develop us, and give us direction in life. Don’t forget to be prayed-up. You will definitely need His strength and power to get through the week. I hope that I can go with you on a future mission trip. Maybe back to Portugal?

    Mike Roon already gave me a new saddle for you to try. It is funky looking, but he says it so comfortable…even after 250 miles. He also is putting together the gear we will need in a couple of weeks.

  7. Jordan, I hope you have an amazing time in Guatemala!! It makes me smile that you are showing other children of God the way you serve and love him. You are such a good role model for these people!! Volleyball camp has been tiring 9-11:30 little kids, 12:30-3 for us, but hey it keeps me busy, since i don’t have my phone buddy!lol.. Miss you and see you when you get back!

  8. Hey Jordan, I hope your having a wonderful time in Guatemala!!! It should be such a great experience for you and your team, God is using you for such amazing things, PRAISE GOD!!! As you go on throughout this trip I just wanted to remind you to do everything in Love, with your actions make people want to know Jesus, BE SALTY (thats my favorite “phrase” right now) Matthew 5……Show what it truly means to have a relationship with GOD, you’ll be amazed with how many people you’re going to affect on this trip…..GOD loves you and he’ll keep you safe.     I started my guitar lessons yesterday and, in my opinion, didn’t do all that great. There were not many notes that actually sounded musical. I have to go over my lesson 10 TIMES today (as per the teacher’s instruction)! Learning to play the thing is going to take longer than I had hoped…. Cara got home late last night, but I am looking forward to talking with her and hearing about all she was able to do in the Dominican Republic. Nate leaves on Friday for his mission trip. Otherwise, not much is going on here.

    We have been praying for you and can already see how God is bringing about His plans in you and the team. I’m so excited that you get to be a part of building a home for a family, providing for them in a way that is not possible here in GR. Remember to have fun, too, to make memories with the families there that will rest deep in your heart and bring you joy in the days ahead. May the wonders you experience be too many to declare!

    Your very cool mom (who else do you know can say their mom takes bass guitar lessons!) showed me how to keep track of your group by using this site. Just wanted you to know that we are thinking of you throughout the day and praying often for your safety and also that your work will have an impact of the lives of others. Cara arrived home safely after a long and unexpected day of flight delays. It feels so good to have her home. You guys will have a lot to catch up on with all your travels.
    Colossians 3:23 – Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men… it is the Lord Christ you are serving. This verse describes you well, keep it in mind as you serve throughout this next week.

  18. Jord–Nothing pleases us more than to watch you as you experience life in such an important way–serving others. This is just what you are doing right now. God bessed each of us so that we could be a blessing to others. We are looking forward to hearing about the blessings you will experience.
    Grandpa has been busy helping Aunt Mari paint the outside of her home. It has been hot here(bet you know what that feels like!) but has cooled down tonight. Nicole should be arriving tonight for a few weeks in Traverse. Looking forward to seeing you at the end of your up-coming bike trip. It was fun to see your smiling face on our computer–keep it up.   19. Hi Jord. I hope you had a really great day working on the home and meeting people in the village. God is using you and your team to provide one of life’s most basic needs – shelter. Soon a family will see God meet their need, and it is because you were willing to travel to Guatemala and work hard on their behalf. In this way, Jordan, you demonstrate to the Guatemala people how much God loves them, and you demonstrate to God how much you love Him. It is so cool how God lets us be involved in mmeting the needs of other people.

    As you can imagine, I have been thinking about you and praying for you and your teammates all day. Of course I had to do other things as well, but you were always on my mind. As I write this it reminds me of Psalm 8:4, where God says “what is man that you [God] are mindful of him.” Although I am frequently distracted, God never stops thinking about you, Jordan. He never misses one thought or concern of yours. He is so powerful and mighty that He controls the entire universe. Yet He is so personal and loves you so much, that He does’t miss a single moment of your life. There is no one else worthy of your complete trust. It is such a great feeling knowing that He is in control.

    Do what you can to stay healthy. It was good to read your note and hear how you’re doing. I love you, Jord.

  22. Hey Jordan! Hope you’re having a good time already! I didn’t get back until very early this morning… a little later than planned because of the flight delays. Is it warm down there? Where I was it was around 90 every day and I’m thinking it’s probably similar where you are, but don’t worry, you get used to it. When you get back we will have to do some biking, maybe even a triathlon! I will keep you in my prayers every day. I’m sure God is opening your eyes to a lot of new sights and is teaching you about a whole new part of the world. I know that my eyes were opened over the last month.   32. HEY ITS GREAT TO HEAR FROM ALL OF YOU, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WRITING. YOUR NOTES BRING SO MUCH STRENGTH TO ME.
    TODAY WE SANDED THE DRYWALL MUD AND STUCCOED THE OUTSIDES OF THE HOMES. INDSTEAD OF WORKING IN OUR INDIVIDUAL TEAMS WE WORKED AS A WHOLE GROUP, IT WAS A TON OF FUN AND WE GOT DONE BEFORE LUNCH. SO AFTER LUNCH WE VISITED HOMES BUILT 2 YEARS AGO, AND THEY WERE STILL STANDING!(supprising, thinking of the people who built them). WE ALSO WENT TO THE SCHOOL AND PLAYED MANY GAMES AS WELL AS SANG AND GAVE OUT DULCES (CANDIES). I HAD A GREAT DAY AND LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM ALL OF YOU.

  33. Hi, Jordan, I hope everything is going well for you. I miss seeing you, but I am so glad that you are doing what God wants you to be doing. As I was praying for you today I was reminded of my favorite Bible character, Nehemiah. He was one og the greatest prayer warriors, and he knew that God would hear our prayers when we pray for each other. He prayed “O Lord, God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and obey his commands, let ypur ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants.” And God definitely heard Nehemia and answered his prayers. God will do the same for us as we pray for you and your teammates.

    I played golf today in our annual match-play event with the school administrators. Unfortunately I lost my match. Sure wish I could have had you on my team. Hopefully we can play again fairly soon.

    Dr Colegrove scheduled me for an MRI on my shoulder next week. They asked me if I have claustrophobia and i said no. I sure hope that’s true.

    I will keep writing, and definitely keep praying for you. I love you, Jordan.

  34. Hi there! A beautiful day here, finally cooled off. Went to lunch with some from Ivanrest and we talked about all of you guys and the good time it looks like you are having. Are you learning how to drywall anything? Our bath and bedroom were redone today and what a mess that makes. I just finished cleaning up the dust and now I’m going out for a walk (yes, a walk, we’re a little lazy tonight) with your mom. Remember to take pictures and be sure you are in some of them. We will love seeing them when you are home. It’s quiet around the circle without your friends coming and going all day long. Sounds like our prayers are being answered and we will continue to pray for you and your group.

  35. Dear Jordan!
    Just a newsy note. FedEx got some teeth pulled and has been pretty slow and groggy from the side effects of being put under for the surgery. Remember how nasty Gaby got when she was put to sleep? She became a screamer with a meow that echoed throughout the house…kind of a doctor Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde. The end result of all this, however, is that his breath no longer smells–at all! I love it when HE smiles, now I can smile when I pet him!
    I had a good day painting at Grandma’s. She wanted to see the web-site at Uncle Ed’s office because she has no computer. If I had a video-camera when she leaned over to talk to your picture on the web-site we could have been $10,000 richer. It was absolutely precious. She was genuinely surprised that she couldn’t just talk into the computer (and she spoke pretty loud to make sure you could hear her)! It was one of those moments that I’ll treasure for a long time!
    I still have to practice my guitar lesson tonight but am going for a walk first.

Nate and I used your pool for a couple hours this afternoon. He just left my house and is leaving for Peru in a couple hours. Tonight I am going to the hospital to volunteer.     Just a regular day today. Practiced guitar, talked to Shrea & Pattie. They were up early because they are still on Italy time. As we anticipated, they had a great time. I wish they had a site like this so we could have followed them around Europe. Andrea had her b-day party last night, pretty sure everyone got soaked! Uncle Ed & Aunt Kathy are leaving for a week in San Diego for a wedding. A son of one of their friends is getting married on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The bride and groom are both deaf, so it should be an interesting wedding. Kathy is singing at the ceremony, but I’m not sure if she knows how to sign the words to the song. Probably.

  44. Hi Jordan. I hope you’re still doing well. We were sorry to hear about your teammates, Rachel, Amber, and Alexa. We have been praying that they get well and that the rest of you stay healthy. The pictures are very helpful to see where you are working and the kids you are spending time with. I have one of you as the desktop on my laptop. That way I can see your smiling face all day as I think about and pray for you. I never forget what Samual said about prayer: “As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you.” Because I love you and God so much, I consider it a priviledge and a responsibility to pray for you throughout every day, and especially during this week. And in addition to your well being, I am praying that your heart will be fully committed to God. Because then, God will give you clear direction for your life and He can use you to accomplish great things.

    I made reservations for the second night of our bike trip. You can tell Kevin that I will need a final number on the 4th of July. I am going to the bike shop tomorrow to get more gear. I haven’t riden since you left. Nate Zokoe said he wants you to ride with Cara and him when he gets back from Peru. There may still be time to train for the Barlow Lake triathalon when you return.

    Mom had lunch today with Tiia. She was exited to hear about your trip and wanted you to know that she aced her exam at GVSU.

    Just finished running and am going to help Dad finish painting the front of the house–it’s the same color as it was so it looks the same, just better. He is almost finished, so I’m not going to be that big of a help…. When I look at the pictures and see the plates full of food, I don’t see anything there that you actually like, so I hope the single jar of peanut butter and all the other snacks get you through the week. It’s a gorgeous day here, but it’s very quiet around here. You know how I always say that I don’t like this house because it is SO noisy? Well, I REALLY dislike it when it is SO quiet! So, I learned that lesson this week. Hope you have a wonderful day. I know that you are a man of few words but even one or two from you would be great. Give the dog a bone here (if you get a chance). Just kidding.

  52. Hi, Jordan. The pictures of your home deication are amazing. They tell the whole purpose of your hard work in Guatemala: loving people. Twelve years ago you gave your life to Christ. When this happened, God gave you a new heart, one made to love Him and people more than things. And like evrything else God gives us, it was designed to be developed through use. This week God is strengthening and growing your heart as you serve and love the Guatemala people. If you remember what God once told Samuel: “The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” You have a great heart, Jordan. This week God is making it much stronger.

    I am sorry to hear that more of your teammates are getting sick. We are continuing to pray for you and them. We certainly hope that most of you can remain healthy. If you do get sick, trust that God will help you through it, for He says that “the Spirit helps us in our weakness.” God will not make you go through it alone.

    I can’t wait to see you. You know how much I miss you when you’re gone. I know that I’m the one who needs to grow up, but that will never change.

    I see that mom mentioned that she was going to help do some painting (actually staining). The rest of the story is that Sheri came over to lay by the pool, so what do think mom ended up doing?

  53. Jordan, the pictures of your group look so good. I think you guys did a fantastic job on the homes. The pictures really let us see the progress you are making. I think that those of us here at home are a little jealous of all you’re experiencing. What an amazing week you are having. I think that this trip looks good to Mark, he says that he thinks he would like to do this trip. Yes, we laid out by the pool but somebody had to watch Alex and Jake as they were swimming. What your dad didn’t tell you is that we had gone for a 5 mile run before relaxing! Your mom was painting tonight. Cara is headed out for a run and I’m biking with her.     It Barb. How are you doing? It took 2 conversations with your mom before I realized I could write to you while on your trip. Better late then never. How awesome that you agreed to go on this trip. Some of my best memories are mission trips I have taken so I pray that this is true for you! You are making a huge difference in the people’s lives down there. Not only can you make their lives more comfortable you get to let them know why you are doing it. We love because He first loved us. It doesn’t have to be a complicated message. We just give back because He gave so much to us. I pray for your strength and endurance for the rest of the trip and good health.   55. Hey Jordan! Keep up the great work down there! Life here isn’t as exciting but it is relaxing. I went to Holland beach today with some of the girls from my team. It was really nice- not too hot but not too cold. Just finished running and playing speed scrabble with my mom and Alex. Tomorrow I’m going to go for a long run with my mom and your mom.     Yes, it really is 0455 AM – I am at work and my patients are asleep for the moment. The house/dedication/family pics are awesome! It has been fun to watch slabs of cement turn into actual houses – now five houses are no longer just houses – each has become a HOME!! Please be assured of our continued thoughts and prayers as you serve God and show His love in so many different ways. No volcanoes, but there is a beautiful full moon in the Michigan sky tonight – what an awesome reminder of our great God! Keep smiling – those smiles are contagious!! Dixon has all of us loving rice and beans now, they have exceptional taste, hope you have tried some of it. You all look so happy and fulfilled about the mission you are on, it is just so fun to see the pictures.     Hope you have another good day! I spoke with the Sandy Venturini yesterday. Aaron is driving back to the Naval Academy today, Lauren was in a car accident (a Grand Valley student ran into her and totalled her car–they are both okay, praise the Lord), and Brandon is busy playing basketball. They have dial-up so will probably not be able to see the team’s pictures or leave you a note. They are remodelling their house right now and presently have no furniture in their living room so are doing a lot of lounging on the floor.
    We learned about the word compassion in church today. In Latin the word means with passion, and in Greek the word means more of a feeling coming from deep inside you (the pastor demonstrated by folding his arms across his stomach). So, as you show compassion to those around you, let it not just come from your face, or your hands, or your feet. Let it come from deep within!

  59. HEY EVERYBODY. SORRY I HAVENT GOT THE CHANCE TO TYPE LATELY, IT SEEMS LIKE EVERY TIME I GET ON ITS EITHER “TIME TO GO TO BED” OR “TIME TO GET OFF”. I FEELING FINE, JUST INCASE ANYONE WAS WONDERING. THE PAST FEW DAYS HAVE BEEN GREAT, THE DEDICATIONS AND THE FIRST VILLGE DAY. ALTHOUGH IT GOT A LITTLE TIRING, THE DEDICATIONS WERE SO POWERFUL. YESTERDAY WAS GREAT TOO, THE 3 HR RIDE WAS HOT AND CRAMPED BUT ONCE WE WERE IN THE VILLAGE IT WAS EVEN HOTTER(like 110) BUT NONE THE LESS WE PLAYED SOCCER AND OTHER GAMES. WE HAD SO MUCH FUN W/ THE LAZER PEN UNLESS IT WAS POINTED AT YOU B/C THEN THE KIDS WOULD PINCH YOU. I GOT TO MEET MANY KIDS AND WE CAME UP W/ A NEW GAME. HERMANO JESUS WAS SO AMAZING AND YOU I COULD FEEL GOD WHEN WE ALL SANG. TODAY WE HAVE ANOTHER LONG RIDE BUT IT’LL BE WORTH IT.

  62. Hi Jordon! I just finished looking at all your pictures and reading through your messages. What a great experience you are having! I know you are very aware of God’s direction and His strength and love as you serve Guatemalans and your fellow team members this week. And I know your life will never be the same. I just want to encourage you as you “go the distance.” I can hardly wait to hear your stories and reflections when you get back. Grandpa Dooley and I finished painting my house yesterday morning (Hooray!) and I got the shutters back up this afternoon. It looks better than I had even hoped.
    Two of my favorite verses (like “life verses”) are in Ephesians. “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” Ephesians 3:20,21 I’m sure you are experiencing that “immeasureably more” in your life this week. I’m praying for you and praising God for the way He is working in and through you.   63. Hi, Jordan. I sure hope that you had another great experience today. If it was anything like yesterday, you must be getting quite exhausted. We are continuing to pray that you remain healthy through this entire week. As I thought about you, a couple of verses came to mind. First, where Peter reminded Christians, “If you serve, do it with the strength God provides.” And second, where Paul illustrates how great God’s strength is by telling us that “the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.” Because you are serving God, He wants to give you the necessary strength … the supernatural strength … to get through each tiring day. Ask Him, and trust Him to do it.

    This afternoon, Megan rescued a little kitten from some country road and brought it home, to our house. Your mom is babysitting the little kitty for a couple of days until other arrangments can be made. As you can immagine, she is quite happy to be holding it while it sleeeps in her lap. The kitten is not as small as Lucky was, but it is only about the size of my hand.

    In one of your pictures, there was a volcano in the background with steam or smoke rising out of it. Carlos told me about the volcano which had steam or smoke rising out of it, as well as the one which has fire and lava visible at night. I am glad that you have been able to see both of them. What a cool experience, one that you won’t see in Michigan. Even when we were in Hawaii we didn’t get to see any active volcanoes. Lucky guy.

    I can’t wait to see you. You seem to be having the experience of a lifetime and it is hard waiting to hear all about it. But patience is a virtue, so patient we must be.

We are so happy that you have been so healthy and we praise Jesus for that.   66. YESTERDAY WAS REALLY EXCITING. WE DROVE UP THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS AND SAW ATITLAN LAKE VOTED THE 3RD BEST LAKE IN THE WORLD, IT HAD 7 VOLCANOES SURROUNDING IT. WE WERE ALL AMAZED BY THE BEAUTY. OUR TIME IN THE VILLAGE FLEW BY. THERE WERE SO MANY PEOPLE WHO CAME TO CHRIST, IT WAS GREAT. BUT THE REAL ADVENTURE CAME WITH THE TREE THAT BLOCKED THE ROAD (for more info see everyone elses) BUT IN THE END WE MADE IT HOME SAFE.   69. Hi, Jordan. I will be leaving in just a few minutes for a council meeting, but I wanted to write you before I left. Hopefully you are still well and enjoyed a great final day in Guatemala. If you were able to spend time in Antigua I can imagine that it was a fun experience. Carlos has told me about the town and it’s historical looking architecture.

    I want to remind you how much I love you and how proud I am of you. You are such a wise person, as evidenced by the choices you have made in your life so far. You made a good decision to follow God’s leading and be a part of this mission trip – and what an incredible experience you have had. If you continue to put God first in your life, and are sensitive and obedient to His direction for your life, you will enjoy a life full of incredible experiences. It is just the kind of life which God has in mind for you: “I came that you might have life and have it abundantly or to the full.” God has so many great things planned for you, and He uses times like this past week to prepare you for them. I am so thankful that I get to be your dad, to love you, encourage you, support you, and help God guide you. It is a role which I cherish and thoroughly enjoy.

    I pray that you will have a safe trip home tomorrow, I can’t tell you how anxious I am to see you. Enjoy your last few hours, it sounds like your going to be up early again tomorrow morning. I love you, Jordan.

    Dad has such a way with words, doesn’t he?! Well, I concur with his remarks, so it should help my final message to be shorter.
    Not much news today. Having the kitten has been fun–she had a lot of visitors today. Andrea and Charlie & his Mom are coming in a few minutes to see if they would like to adopt her; Andrea would LOVE that! Tomorrow I hope to have lunch with Sandy V. (it is her birthday) and then I have my second guitar lesson. Hopefully, my instructor will be able to tell that I have practiced! The highlight of the day, OF COURSE, will be meeting you at the airport. If there is any food item you would like me to take along for you to snack on in the car, just let me know.

    With you having been on your mission trip, it has caused me to think about mine when I was your age. Working with the Navajo Indian children and learning about their culture, sharing the gospel with them, and just spending time with them was one of the highlights of my life. There have been a number of experiences (both happy and “crappy”) that have been spiritual milestones for me, and I’m sure this experience will be one for you, too. As your Mom, though, I’m glad that your’s wasn’t six weeks like mine was! I am ready to have you back home.

  71. TODAY WAS FUN WE VISITED 2 VILLAGES THAT THE TEAM HAD BUILT AT IN YEARS PAST, THEN WE HAD LUNCH IN CHIMICHONGANEGRA (SUBWAY) AND THEN WENT TO ANTIGUA. I CANT WAIT TO SEE YOU ALL TOMORROW.
